Name: Gemini Jazz Topic: When To Share and When Not To
Brief Description of the Lesson: My lesson would be geared towards 2nd graders who are using or are interested in using Facebook. It would touch on specific pieces of personal information that a child might share when they should not and therefore compromising their safety. Getting them to understand that strangers are on the Internet too with the overall goal being to give them skills to be safe while on the Internet.
Learning Targets: I can decide when it is ok to share my personal information. I can decide what personal information I want to share with a new friend on Facebook. I can be safe when I am on the Internet.
Engage Learners’ Interests: I will use the social networking site, Facebook, to engage my learners since it is something that they are interested in and already using.
Describe the Activity: The BBK (building background knowledge) would be an open forum on what they have been told about strangers, and defining why they should be guarded with a stranger. Next we would discuss what information is ok to share what is not ok to share with a stranger. Then, I would introduce the concept of a “virtual stranger,” and what they have been told about it. After that, I would give out the surveys for them to fill out. In closing, I would leave them with the thought that strangers are not only in person but on the Internet too.
Assessment Procedure: I would use the worksheets as a survey to see what information each student would share and when they think it is ok to share it. This information would be used to construct the next lesson which would describe when it’s ok to share the specific topics and with who. After the 2nd lesson, I would give the same survey again to assess progress of the students and success of the lesson.
